If you’re even remotely interested in skincare, chances are you’ve heard of retinol, if not dabbled in it personally. As one of the most studied and oft-touted ingredients by dermatologists, aestheticians and beauty editors , retinol has a reputation as “the gold standard for anti-aging” thanks to its ability to tackle things like acne, fine lines and collagen breakdown. Retinol is also a great addition to many people’s skincare routines because it can be found in over-the-counter products (meaning you can buy them without a prescription).

But can these OTC (and sometimes quite expensive) options work as well as their prescription counterparts? I worked with a team of testers who tried scores to bring you the 12 best retinol serums for every skin type and concern. I also tapped two dermatologists to share their thoughts, along with advice for using a retinol serum in your skincare routine.

She is also a published medical author, journal editor, and a frequent speaker at national and international conferences.

How to Use Retinol Serum

Dr. Frieling recommends starting with a pea-sized amount once a week. “The goal is to gradually increase application to every night and avoid dryness and irritation,” she adds. In regards to your skincare routine, it’s best to use after cleaning/toner and before layering on moisturizer. If you do apply in the morning, the derm suggests applying sunscreen on top, as retinols can make you even more sensitive to the sun.

How I Chose the Best Retinol Serums

I did extensive research on the best retinol serums in the market, combing through countless reviews from popular retailers like Sephora, Amazon, Dermstore and more. From there, I rallied PureWow editors, Gallery Media Staffers and readers to test out one retinol serum for over two months. Each tester was tasked with taking before and after photos of their skin (specifically their areas of concern) and to document their experience after eight weeks. Whether they were trying to tackle dark spots, acne, fine lines or elasticity, each tester analyzed the retinol serum’s key ingredients, concentration levels and reported on if it solved their skincare woes. Here’s the best of the best.

For Editor-in-Chief Jillian Quint, it’s a gentle formula that’s great at improving skin tone and subtly improved her between-the-eyes wrinkles. “It's not as dramatic as I would have hoped, but looking at the before and after pictures, I can tell my skin is glowier and my forehead wrinkles are less pronounced,” she says.

Quint suggests using a pea-sized amount each night and applying it all over. “It does work,  although results aren't dramatic. After eight weeks of nightly use, I'm starting to see improvement, especially in my 11's.”

A go-to for Kelly Rowland, who calls it “magic in a bottle,” this cult-favorite serum features 2.2 percent encapsulated retinol and lactic acid, which is an exfoliating ingredient designed to clear up and brighten your complexion with each use. Senior Editor Dana Dickey loves its lightweight and gentle formula, sharing, “It smoothed the bumpy lines under my eyes from sun damage and evened out my ruddiness from wind- and sunburned cheeks. It basically made my skin smoother and less ‘lived-in’ looking.”

The retinol also delivered in evening out her skin tone and smoothing out little bumps due to clogged pores—though it didn’t happen overnight. “My skin felt more vibrant right away (I could feel the retinol and AHAs penetrating my skin and getting circulation going) but it took at least a month to see results,” she says.

For those who are already familiar with retinol and are looking for a slightly stronger serum to add to their arsenal, give this potent pick a try. Although some retinols get a bad rap for being too drying, Social Media Strategist Isabella Mohamed found it worked well for her skin type.

Packed with 0.3 percent pure retinol and hyaluronic acid, Mohamed praises it for being easy to use and effective. She noticed some improvement over time, despite feeling slight irritation and dryness that subsided over time. “This serum was very effective for my skin and I started seeing results in about three weeks and improvement in six,” she tells me. “I’m curious to see the long-term results and would recommend this for anyone with dry skin or who wants to overall improve their texture.”

Marie Veronique

  • Tester's Name: Natalie LaBarbera
  • Tester's Age: 30's
  • Tester's Skin Type: dry
  • Tester's Target Area: smile lines

If you’re looking to splurge on retinol, consider this clean beauty brand recommended by our very own Associate Commerce Editor Natalie LaBarbera. “It’s been very effective and I'm not even halfway through the tube yet! My mom has even commented on how good my skin looks over FaceTime, and I think it's definitely brightened my skin and also reduced my smile lines a bit. Overall, I really like it and will continue using it,” she shares.

The gentle formula relies on bakuchiol, a plant-derived ingredient that helps brighten and soothe skin, as well as retinyl sunflower seedate (aka a form of retinol) to maintain moisture and reduce irritation. “I'll definitely be keeping this retinol in my regular routine, and would recommend it to others, especially anyone with sensitive skin. I love how gentle it is and that I only have to use a tiny amount to cover my whole face and neck, making the price worth it,” she says.

Kiehl's

  • Tester's Name: Candace Davison
  • Tester's Age: 30's
  • Tester's Skin Type: dry
  • Tester's Target Area: forehead lines

This retinol serum promises to firm skin, reduce wrinkles and even skin texture, but are the claims true? VP of Editorial Candace Davison didn’t hold back, telling me the pros and cons of this daily cream. “It reduced some fine lines, but the results aren't very dramatic. If you're expecting Botox, think again. But it is a nice, light retinol that gave me a little confidence boost after application, particularly when it came to my forehead lines,” she says. “I also noticed a very subtle glow and a bit more firmness. It was very natural and not too noticeable; I just seemed a bit more fresh-faced and alert.”

The creamy formula also glides seamlessly on the skin without any rubbing or tapping in. Davison recommends applying this retinol every other day, especially if you have dry or sensitive skin. “When I used it daily, it felt a little irritating around my cheeks, so reducing my usage helped,” she shares.

Murad

  • Tester's Name: Sabrina Singh
  • Tester's Age: 40's
  • Tester's Skin Type: combination, acne-prone
  • Tester's Target Area: fine lines, discoloration

This retinol serum uses retinol tri-active technology to visibly firm, smooth and even skin tone. After eight weeks of testing, PureWow reader Sabrina Singh saw a small difference in her fine lines and wrinkles, but believes it worked best for improving her skin’s texture and tone. “The serum made my forehead feel leathery for the first week. But afterwards, it was gentle enough and I didn't hesitate to use it daily,” she shares. “I believe the retinol serum was effective, though my skin changes so much throughout any given month. I enjoyed using it but couldn't see any difference in my skin in terms of fine lines. It did help with redness and overall skin texture.”

All this said, Singh reports that she will continue to use the serum, which has become a big part of her skincare routine. “The before and after photos show some results—even if I didn’t think it was doing too much,” she adds.

SkinMedica

  • Tester's Name: Stephanie Maida
  • Tester's Age: 30's
  • Tester's Skin Type: combination
  • Tester's Target Area: discoloration, dark marks

This retinol claims to renew skin’s tone and texture, soothe irritation and combat signs of premature aging. Senior Commerce Editor Stephanie Maida applied a small amount before bed and usually topped it off with moisturizer. Over the course of eight weeks, she saw a difference in her skin. “I definitely noticed a reduction in fine lines and an improvement in a pesky textured/off-colored spot on my forehead. I also have a lot less redness, and my skin feels smooth and even-toned,” she shares.

Formulated with 0.5 percent retinol and magnolia bark extract, the lower concentration is a hit for beginners. “One of the biggest pros is how gentle this serum is given that it's meant for newbies. I haven't experienced any redness, irritation, flaking or that dreaded retinol ‘purge’ while using it,” she says. “For all-around radiance and fine line control, this has been great!”

10. Neutrogena Retinol Pro+ Power Serum

What We Like

  • easy to apply
  • pleasant scent
  • smooth formula

What We Don't Like

  • not meant for beginners
  • can experience some dryness

Neutrogena

  • Tester's Name: Sara Baksh
  • Tester's Age: 30's
  • Tester's Skin Type: combination, sensitive
  • Tester's Target Area: tone, texture

Whether you want to tackle deep wrinkles, dark spots or elasticity, this serum claims to provide improvement in only two weeks. Business Operation Manager Sara Baksh decided to test that theory in a span of two months and saw it visibly improve her texture and tone within a week. “I started noticing my skin looked more even and my pores were starting to appear smaller. After the first two weeks, I started using it more routinely and that's when I noticed that some of the hyperpigmentation, while still noticeable, was starting to disappear and my skin looked brighter.”

Baksh did find that the strong formula led to some dryness. “When reading the instructions on the box, Neutrogena made it clear that this product is for experienced retinol users and may be too strong for first timers. It does say "Pro+" after all! I started slowly with 1 to 2 drops, letting it sit for a few minutes and then following up with a night cream. Also living in Florida, it was tough to use a product that increases sun sensitivity, but I found that applying sunscreen afterwards (and doing my best to avoid serious beach days) was all I needed,” she shares.

  • didn't reduce the appearance of wrinkles

Peter Thomas Roth

  • Tester's Name: Nimarta Roberts
  • Tester's Age: 40's
  • Tester's Skin Type: combination
  • Tester's Target Area: under-eyes

Although this night serum is great for the entire face, PureWow reader Nimarta Roberts used it primarily around her eyes and saw a difference after just a few weeks of testing. “It does a great job of keeping the area around my eyes moisturized, which makes them look much less tired. It was gentle on the delicate skin and did not cause any irritation. I felt as if my eyes looked brighter and more rested,” she shares.

The creamy formula uses 1.5 percent retinol to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as skin texture and tone. For Roberts, it was easy to use and she relied on it every other night around her eyes. “The serum has led to an overall improvement of the skin around my eyes. My skin feels more hydrated and does not wrinkle as much. I also noticed results within days of testing when it comes to hydration. I don’t think that my wrinkle lines have disappeared or lessened other than the fact that my eye area is more moisturized.”

Best Retinol Serum for Sensitive Skin

12. CeraVe Resurfacing Retinol Serum

What We Like

  • great for sensitive skin
  • gentle formula
  • glides easily on skin

What We Don't Like

  • may not offer intense results

CeraVe

  • Tester's Name: Chelsea Candelario
  • Tester's Age: 30's
  • Tester's Skin Type: combination, sensitive
  • Tester's Target Area: acne marks, hyperpigmentation

As someone with sensitive skin, I’ve always been wary about using retinol (unless it was prescribed by my derm). But this CeraVe pick put all my worries to rest. I went from using it every other day to applying it daily with no irritation nor excessive dryness. Aside from retinol, it’s made from licorice root extract and ceramides, which makes it super lightweight, gentle and calming on my skin.

While many retinols focus on fine lines and wrinkles, this one targets post-acne marks and pores. I wasn’t convinced it was working after a month of using it, but a few weeks later, I’m impressed by the difference; my skin looks smoother and brighter. Although my acne marks are still slightly visible, they’re less noticeable and red. And when I was dealing with massive hyperpigmentation around my neck, I relied on this and my moisturizer to soothe the area. Safe to say, I’m not afraid of applying a retinol anymore.

What to Consider When Shopping for Best Retinol Serums

  • Retinol Type: While retinol is often used as a catchall term for any products containing the ingredient, there are many variants of it (i.e., retinoic acid, tretinoin, retinyl palmitate, retinyl linoleate and retinyl acetate), which all come in varying degrees of strength.
  • Concentration: According to the dermatologists, retinols can range from 0.1 to 0.5 percent. The concentration makes a difference when it comes to your skin type. Dr. Fieling suggests 0.01 to 0.25 percent for sensitive and/or dry skin,, 0.25 to 1 percent for combination skin, 0.5 to 1 percent for oily skin and 0.25 percent for mature skin. However, Dr. Camp recommends everyone should start with a lower concentration, regardless of your skin type. “As your skin develops a tolerance to it, you can gradually increase the strength of the product,” he shares.
  • Ingredients: Look for common ingredients like peptides, ceramides, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide, which helps make the retinol more gentle, soothing and hydrating.
  • Skin Concerns: While most retinol serums target similar concerns, consider doing research on ones that can tackle your fine lines, dull skin and/or acne. Luckily, I did all the work for you above.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Often Should You Use a Retinol Serum?

Dr. Camp recommends every other day before gradually increasing the usage to daily. “This step lets you slowly introduce the product and allows your skin to adjust to its effects. If well tolerated, the frequency of use can be increased. However, those with dry or mature skin should consider using a retinol once every 4th night for a month before increasing use,” he explains.

What Age Should You Start Using Retinol Serum?

Dr. Camp says you can start in your twenties as a “preventative treatment to preserve the health of skin and maintain collagen levels.” However, mature skin (starting at late 30s) benefits the most by adding retinol in their routine and addressing skin changes related to aging (i.e, fine lines, wrinkles and dark spots).

Are Retinol Serums Safe for Everyone to Use?

While all skin types can try retinol serums, both dermatologists warn those who are trying to conceive, or are pregnant or nursing should not use them. They also point out that those with eczema, psoriasis or rosacea should use with caution or speak with their dermatologist before applying, as retinols can cause more dryness and enhance these skin conditions.

How Long Does It Take to See Results from Retinol?

Everyone’s skin is different, so some might see it after a month or a few months. Dr. Fieling says you make see a change in texture and tone in 4 to 6 weeks, while deeper lines and wrinkles may improve between 3 to 6 months.
