Uzo Aduba Undoubtedly Steals the Show in Netflix’s ‘The Residence’

The show kicks off with an introduction to the inner workings of the White House, offering a glimpse of the maze-like corridors and countless staff members that keep it running. This particular night has everyone on edge because it’s the state dinner. While the guests enjoy entertainment provided by Kylie Minogue (played by herself), the staffers are working tirelessly to ensure the event goes smoothly. Of course, everything changes when the White House chief usher, A.B. Wynter (Giancarlo Esposito), is found dead. That’s when Detective Cordelia Cupp (Uzo Aduba) comes in to investigate. 

The story is told from the perspective of witnesses as they testify in court months after the murder. It also includes flashbacks that help illustrate exactly what happened.

I would be remiss if I didn’t give major credit to Aduba, who undoubtedly steals every scene she’s in. Her character kinda reminds me of Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren from Orange Is the New Black because Cordelia Cupp is one of a kind (like Crazy Eyes). She’s so unique that her peers don’t quite understand her, and Aduba plays into that nuance beautifully. Cordelia’s intelligent mind is just one of her many quirks, and I can’t wait to see how the character develops throughout the rest of the season. 

One of my favorite parts about The Residence is the spot-on balance between comedy and drama. The plot itself is dramatic and mysterious, but the writers still found ways to incorporate humor whenever possible. Right when things are getting serious, one of the characters breaks the ice with a funny line I can’t help but laugh at. It’s done in a masterful way where the comedy doesn’t take away from the whodunnit tale—instead, it complements the serious tone and heightens the mystery element.

Long story short: I highly recommend you add The Residence to your streaming queue.
