Best Summer Dresses for 5'1, original photos of Stephanie Maida

I never thought I’d be a short-fluencer, but here I am, having written about the best formal dresses for petites and fielding questions weekly about the best styling tips for shorties (hint: V-necks are your friend) and generally how to look your best when you come up to everyone’s belly button (my motto: What Would Florence Pugh Do?).

So it's only natural that I’d weigh in on my favorite summer dresses since, as we minis know, the standard to-the-floor sundress can leave us with inches of pooled fabric on the ground. My criteria for a summertime frock? I want options in terms of length, style and sexiness. (Sometimes I want to look as hot as the weather; sometimes I need something I can comfortably eat three scoops of ice cream in.)

Anything I’m buying needs to be proportional on 5'1" frame; the straps can’t be too long, the waist should hit in the right place and anything that bills itself as ankle-length can’t actually graze my toes. These four dresses achieve all that and more.

I, along with my fellow short-gal editors here at PureWow, have previously sung the praises of Quince's petite-friendly offerings, and this tiered dress just jumped to the top of my list. While it's more of a maxi than a midi on my frame, it falls at the perfect spot on my ankle, allowing me to wear it with everything from flats to platform sandals without the risk of tripping. The smocked bust and thick, ruffled straps are both sturdy and supportive enough to go braless, but also offer plenty of coverage to wear a standard one without it peeking through (as I actually am in this photo!). Of course, the best thing about this beauty is its 100 percent European linen construction, which makes it so light and airy, I know I'll be throwing it on to get through the most sweltering days.

The perfect day-to-night summer dress doesn't exi—let me stop you there. Ever since I picked up this leopard-print denim mini in my last Abercrombie & Fitch haul, I have been reaching for it nonstop, donning it everywhere from brunches and birthday parties to nights out at swanky hotel cocktail bars (see the selfie above). Its shape and structure make it incredibly figure flattering (in a very '60s mod sort of way), while the leopard-print design elevates the denim fabric just enough that it could easily be dressed down or up. (For real, though, it actually looks just as good with sneakers as it does with pointed-toe kitten heels.) Just a heads up: This number does come in petite-specific sizing, but I've opted for the standard length, which hits at just the right point above my knee to be saucy, not scandalous.

Another A&F piece I can't get enough of this season, this A-line midi has a fitted bodice with strategic seaming to shape the figure in such a nice way, complete with a back zip closure to get a sucks-you-in fit. I'm super impressed with the quality of the fabric—a thick-but-breathable cotton featuring just a touch of elastane to add curve-hugging stretch—and the fact that it's fully lined, so that I can go totally bra-free without risking a peep show up top (or anywhere else). Better yet, those thick, comfortable straps are adjustable, so you can make sure they aren't constantly falling down or so tight that they start chafing. And, lest we forget—pockets!

Petite PSA: If you'd like it to swing at your calves in true midi style, it's best to opt for petite sizing as I have (though it's still on the longer side); however, I've also tried on the standard length version, and while it isn't so long as to be trippable, it does fit more like a maxi.

No summer rotation is complete with a good floral frock, and this Madewell find has become an instant favorite. Although it doesn't come in petite-specific sizing, the smocked bodice hits at a flattering point on my waist and gives way to a flowy, body-skimming skirt that grazes the top of my feet and, IMO, makes me look slimmer and longer (with no need to hem). The material is so soft and lightweight, and the square neckline/puff-sleeve combo gives it that feminine, cottagecore vibe I adore in the warm weather. It's pretty much the embodiment of easy-breezy—and it's on sale.
