The clock is ticking, your hair’s still wet and you should’ve left 20 minutes ago—but you’re still scrounging through your closet in search of the perfect look. Hey, we’ve all been there (me, personally? Too many times to count!), but that’s where having a go-to outfit formula comes in.

As an editor living in New York City, my 5 to 9 frequently consists of parties and press events, which, oftentimes, I have to run to straight from the office. Now, it’s hard enough nailing down an ensemble that works just as well in a corporate setting as it does at a cocktail party, but throw in the fact that I’m a petite gal—for whom cool, slouchy pieces and flowy dresses aren’t the best bet—and it adds a whole other layer of style strategizing.

But one day it struck me, the perfect formula for looking chic, feeling put-together and flattering my 5’1" stature: a button-down top tucked into a fitted, high-waist skirt. Colors, prints and even skirt lengths matter not—the combinations are endless, and can therefore adapt to practically any occasion. Plus, it’s a guaranteed winner for my fellow shorties, who benefit from the sleek, leg-lengthening effect of a slim-fitting, high-rise skirt, along with the V-shaped peek of décolletage that comes with leaving a button open. And since our waists remain defined, even the slouchiness and volume of a slightly oversized piece up top won’t result in our figures getting lost or overpowered. The best part? It can save you a ton of time getting dressed.

Scroll on to see how I (and some fellow petite fashionistas, like Oscar-winner Mikey Madison) pull off the look.

1. Sparkle in Some Sequins

I’ve long been a fan of fitted embellished skirts, which, in my “indie sleaze” days, I would pair with a torn-up vintage band tee for a touch of edge. OK, I may still be a fan of that combo, but when I need to embrace a somewhat classier look, I’m all about a sequin skirt and a silky button-down. While the top keeps things grounded enough for a day at the office, those glittering accents make it feel ready for a soirée. It’s a different sort of contrast to that of a dressy skirt and a T-shirt, but one that still feels fresh and interesting. And, hey, you can never go wrong with some sparkle.

2. Try a Crisp Classic

As I mentioned, Anora star and Best Actress winner Mikey Madison, who happens to be 5’3”, is also a fan of this formula. Her approach? Pairing a black tie-worthy maxi skirt with a crisp white button-down—a true classic. The shape and structure of this sort of menswear-inspired top gives even the most petite figures some powerful presence, while a figure-hugging maxi makes the look feel feminine and elegant (at any height, I might add). Petite pro tip: Roll up the sleeves slightly to make your arms look longer.

3. Dress It Down with Denim

On the flip side, you can also dress this look down for more casual outings by going the denim route. Though midi skirts can be notoriously tricky on petites, a fitted denim style with a good slit (like the one I’m donning here) strikes the perfect balance of polished and cool, all while showing some leg for a shortie’s benefit. Minis are always a safe bet (the more leg, the better!), but maxis can work too, so long as they’re not completely shapeless.

4. Slip into Sheer

Why yes, a button-up-and-skirt combo can be sexy for date nights or girls’ nights—just slip into a sheer top like this street styler. It’s definitely a cheeky (and likely NSFW) option, but there’s no denying the fact that it puts a fun and flirty twist on the business casual aesthetic. Office siren, indeed.

5. Add a Pop of Print

Although there’s certainly something chic and ‘90s Ralph Lauren-core about taking a minimalist approach to this formula, there’s nothing stopping you from going full-on maximalist with it. Bold prints, bright colors and clashing patterns are all fair game so long as the proportions are on point. As for me? I can’t resist letting my inner mob wife shine in some animal print.

6. Make It a Monochrome Moment

Last, but never least when it comes to dressing as a petite, is opting for a monochrome moment. Rocking a single block of color is a guaranteed way to elongate the figure, especially when combined with a slim silhouette on your bottom half. Whether I go for a waist-cinching pencil skirt or a curve-hugging Morticia maxi, black-on-black is typically my go-to. However, you can always try something more statement-making by donning a vibrant hue from head to toe, or even heading in the opposite end of the spectrum in all-white-everything.
