Taco Bell may dominate the Mexican-inspired fast food scene on the East coast, but if you live on the West coast, in the Midwest or in the South, Del Taco may wear the crown. If you haven’t tried the chain’s fare before, now’s a great time to do it, considering the resto just launched its summer menu, featuring a new protein, a fan-favorite dessert and a timely drink.

The slow cooked pork carnitas feature fall-apart-tender shredded pork, simmered in spices and finished with a smoky roasted salsa roja made from fire-roasted tomatillos and chipotle peppers. You can order them in four different menu items.
- Carnitas Quesadilla: pork carnitas, house-grated cheddar cheese and salsa roja, folded and flat-grilled in a flour tortilla
- Carnitas Combo Burrito: pork carnitas, house-grated cheddar cheese, slow cooked beans and salsa roja in a warm flour tortilla
- Carnitas Street Tacos: pork carnitas, diced onions, chopped cilantro and salsa roja in warm corn tortillas
- Carnitas Loaded Fries: crinkle-cut fries topped with pork carnitas, house-grated cheddar cheese, salsa roja, secret sauce, diced onions and chopped cilantro
To wash it all down, try one of the Independence Poppers on for size. The O.G. comes with a Sprite base flavored with blue raspberry syrup and crowned with strawberry-flavored popping boba pearls. (Are you jealous, Starbucks?) If you want to cut back on the sugar—or just love summer’s signature sipper—go for the lemonade iteration, which uses Minute Maid Zero Sugar Lemonade in place of Sprite. On the opposite end of the spectrum is the vanilla milkshake popper, studded with fruity pearls and finished with a pool of vibrant blue raspberry flavoring.
