Kate Middleton’s Latest Look Is a Rule-Breaker (And She Still Served)

Gorgeous, as usual

When it comes to fashion, the best rule is: there are no rules. Mix bold colors, clash patterns, wear sequins to brunch—go off. That said, some places do come with a few suggested guidelines. (Yes, like the classic "no shirt, no shoes, no service" situation.) And this week, Kate Middleton gave us a perfect example of how to bend the rules—gracefully.

The Princess of Wales, 43, paid a visit to the brand-new V&A East Storehouse in East London on Tuesday, June 10. She looked as polished as ever in a royal blue Alexander McQueen suit and sleek black heels. But here’s the catch: the venue technically advises against that exact type of footwear.

According to the V&A East Storehouse website, “We recommend wearing practical clothing and flat shoes. The metal grid flooring is not suitable for stilettos or kitten heels.” So, yes—Kate showed up in a full heel moment and, of course, still nailed it.

When People asked Tristram Hunt, the director of the V&A, about Kate’s choice of shoes, he laughed and simply said, “She is a pro! She dealt with that!”

Also worth noting? That navy suit might’ve been a subtle nod to her husband, Prince William. The Prince of Wales is basically the poster child for a classic navy suit—he wears them everywhere, from official royal events to more laid-back engagements. Even Prince George has been spotted looking like his dad’s mini-me in similar tailored looks.

So, while Kate may have technically bent the footwear guidelines, she did it in true royal style.
